Trainee Forensic Engineering and Cathodic Protection Technician - 2021

Corrosion Engineering Solutions [CES] is a consultancy specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of corrosion related defects in the built environment, maritime and renewable energy sectors.

CES have particular specialism in Cathodic Protection and it’s application to Historic Steel Framed Buildings to treat Regent Street Disease, as well as reinforced concrete, and buried and immersed steel structures.

We work across the UK, Highlands and Islands, the Republic of Ireland and occasionally abroad.

The Job Role

CES are seeking a new Trainee technician to join our team based in Tring, Hertfordshire following succesful employement of a similar role in 2020.

The aim of the appointment is to train a new-comer to the industry, from scratch, to become a fully qualified CP & Forensic Engineering Technician. No previous experience of construction is required or expected.

Applicants with relevant experiecne and training will also be considered and will be provided with specific training where needed.

The role will be primarily 8:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and will comprise a mixture of office and site-based activites. Some out of hours [early morning / late night and or weekends] should be expected but it is rare and typically of short duration.

As a Trainee you will be involved in the investigation of material defects, the development of repair schemes and the monitoring and maintenance of systems designed to prevent the degradation of structures. You will be involved in interesting construction and engineering projects, both large and small. In recent years we have been responsible for projects at:

  • The HMS Belfast
  • Tay Road Bridge
  • Selfridges, London
  • Kew Gardens

You will be required to:

  • Assist in on-site investigation and survey work via hands-on use of specialist test equipment, tools, and techniques.
  • Prepare and present survey results and test data in the form of tables and graphs for reporting purposes.
  • Learn and apply skills for the servicing and testing of Cathodic Protection systems.
  • Collect, organise, and present cathodic protection monitoring data.
  • Provide essential input into the design of remedial schemes and strategies.
  • Prepare technical drawings for construction and reporting purposes.

As a Trainee you will be taught and provided training in:

  • Fundamental engineering principals by Chartered Civil and Corrosion Engineers.
  • Computer aided design [CAD] skills through work-based learning and external training.
  • Industry recognised courses and qualifications including training to BS EN ISO 15257 in cathodic protection

Training is expected to take up to 2 to 3 years depending on availaity of training courses and the experience, ability and application of the candidate.

Person Profile

We are looking for a dynamic individual with good practical, analytical and organisational skills. A person willing to travel [mainly within the UK] and who is interested in learning about structures [including historic buildings] and science and technology.

They should have qualifications to A-Level ideally in Maths, English Language and a Physical Science or an A-Level equivalent in an electrical or construction vocation. Humanities subjects which demonstrate sound rational thinking & deductive reasoning [English literature, history etc] will also be viewed positively.

They should have a high level of IT skills particularly in the use of Microsoft and or Google apps. Previous experience in the use of AutoCAD or similar computer aided design packages will be an advantage.

The person should be physically capable to undertake work requiring moderate strength and agility within a construction or industrial setting [able to climb scaffold carrying small tools, and able to carry moderate amounts of equipment and tools onto trains or through airports etc].

A clean driving license and access to a vehicle are desirable for travel to and from site but persons located near to and within a commutable distance of our offices in Tring will be favoured.

Salary & Benefits

Your starting salary will be £18,216 rising to £21,216 upon completion of three sectoral certifications as a Cathodic Protection Technician [See below].

For those with relevant experience and qualifications [BS EN ISO 15257] salary will be negotiable and may exceed that stated above.

Among other training you will be asked to undertake the Institute of Corrosion [ICorr] cathodic protection Technician courses and certification for On-land, Marine and Reinforced Concrete sectors. Upon completion of each sector your salary will be increased by £1,000 per sector.
